Rediscovering Maboneng: A Beacon of Resilience at Bertrand's

For the last two weeks, we have been hosting a day party at the super fly restaurant venue, Bertrand's, located in the heart of Maboneng, a once-popular arts district in Johannesburg's central business district. Like many communities worldwide, COVID-19 took a toll on the businesses in what was once a booming tourist attraction. Though the area is far from desolate, the once freely flowing money through these several blocks filled with art galleries, boutiques, and eateries is not quite as strong.

Bertrand's has become a staple and symbol of persistence and resilience. The menu reflects both the Congolese roots of its founder and the South African culture in which it is situated. The decor is reminiscent of an old brownstone in Brooklyn, with high ceilings and walls filled with books, vinyl, and art. The ambiance is a blend of old and new, filled with wisdom and hope.

The FUN2HEAL team has adopted this space for our personal healing and practice. Every Sunday for the last few weeks, Bertrand, the owner, has graciously allowed us to set up turntables and a sound system. DJ Kiilu Grand plays his soul to the entire neighborhood for upwards of six hours straight! Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae, and more fill the air, creating an atmosphere of joy and unity.

We pray that our VIIBRATION Sundays will live on even beyond our time here in South Africa, welcoming DJs of a similar vibe to be inspired to share and get some healing as well. Bertrand's is more than a restaurant; it's a community hub, a place where the spirit of Maboneng's vibrant past meets the hopeful vision for its future.
